TIDY TOWNS:

Well done to the team who were involved in the tidy up before the Communion, the village was looking beautiful in the sunshine. Did you see the work being done at the Bridge, going up to the graveyard. The area has been opened up and cleared, giving more access to the river. There's more to be done, hopefully it can be also used by the school for nature classes.

HOME on HOLS:

Welcome to Joan Cagney and her son John, who were visiting Granagh last week, all the way from San Francisco. The weather couldn't have been nicer for travelling around. There was a small get together in The Rock, before they left for Dublin, which turned into a bit of a sing-song and a few stories were told.. Joan herself, finished off the night with great hilarity - she reeled off thirteen verses of 'Piddlin Pete'....!! A wonderful Lady with a great outlook.

DID YOU KNOW:

I saw a very informative documentary with Simon Reeve on BBC2. He was doing a tour of the Scandinavian countries, so lots of snow & ice. He visited a school where the children, 3-6yrs, were outside waiting for him in -18° temperature. The teachers were taking them to the nearby forest to play, learn, climb etc. They usually do not go inside unless temperature reaches -30° ?!! The teachers said that the children are rarely sick.. Can you imagine.!

He also visited an army camp where male conscription is compulsory and it's voluntary for females. He asked the young people what they thought about it. They said that have been given a high standard of living, with a comprehensive welfare system that ensures healthcare, education, and social security for all. Therefore, they wanted to give back & learn to protect their country. They learned basic infantry tactics, marksmanship and first aid and basic outdoor skills were emphasized. There was a higher purpose, too, in learning to function as a part of a team while doing things for the first time in your life that you probably never wanted to do. Adapting to a strange new setting with people who had only just met taught them not to fear change and further, that navigating new challenges depended on camaraderie and trust. All of this provides a good foundation for adult life. Finnish people’s favourite word is “sisu”, which roughly means determination, grit, bravery. In '22 a survey was carried out asking people if they would be prepared to defend their country. 80% of the Finns voted yes, while only 30% voted yes in the UK - interesting ???
