50th Jubilee Celebration:

CHURCH MATTERS:

Jubilee Celebration: We had a lovely night celebrating Canon Tom's 50th Jubilee on Saturday last. A large crowd attended Mass and then adjourned to the Hall for refreshments. There were two cakes to be cut as Anne Baggott also made a beautiful cake especially for the occasion, a very talented & generous lady. On behalf of the Pastoral council, Marie Bennett gave a rundown on Canon Tom's career.

A native of Effin, Fr. Tom was ordained to the Priesthood in Thurles in 1974 following which he took up his first appointment as Curate in Mountcollins. At the time, his mother wasn't too impressed, swapping the Golden Vale for bad mountainy land, but he survived. In 1979, he moved to Caherdavin parish, which was to be his home for the next eighteen years. Then in 1997, Fr. Tom became Parish Priest of the Holy Family parish in Southill. Nine years later in 2006, he may have been pushed, but crossed the border, into Co. Clare where he became PP of Parteen/Meelick. However, he gave them the benefit of the doubt and settled down there for the next fourteen years.

His next appointment was the most significant one, because in Sept 2020 he moved to Ballingarry/Granagh parish. It was during the height of Covid amid lockdowns and social distancing which made meeting up with new parishioners almost impossible. However Fr. Tom managed to endear himself to the parish with his easy-going nature and friendly disposition. In the early days of Covid, while in lockdown in Parteen, he wrote an article for the Limerick Leader. His words give us an insight into the man that he is. He wrote - " The virus has given us time to reflect on the wonder of life, to stop and look around us and see the Love of God reflected in people and creation"

Everyone is aware of Fr.Tom's love of the GAA. He played with his native Effin, then with Mountcollins as well as Na Piarsaigh. He was a very skilful player and was even a contender for the Limerick Senior Hurling team. ! He followed Limerick hurling over many lean years but his dedication paid off and finally he saw the team excel. He has been fortunate to attend most of the matches and witness first hand the extraordinary team and management who have raised the bar to new heights.

At the end of Mass, Donal O'Grady, former Limerick Captain & local Clubman, presented Canon Tom with a signed hurley, on behalf of the Limerick team to acknowledge his lifelong support.

Many thanks to Roisín and choir, flautist Christina and those who took part in the Mass. Thanks to the organisers who put a lot of work & thought into the event, to mark this very special occasion - Marie, Fiona, Noelle & Kieran.

FRAUDSMART:

Fraud is everywhere, we are all at risk of losing our money every day.

Criminals are constantly finding new ways to trick you out of losing your money. We wouldn't give the keys of our home to just anyone so we should never do the same with our personal and financial information. Do not trust any out-of-the-blue messages, calls or emails. Ask yourself, could this be fraud?

Fraudsters are using genuine bank, utility and phone company names to make the scam look legitimate. They send you a text message containing a link or a phone number to call. These messages ask you to act urgently to secure your account, pay a fee, or stop fraud. Often these messages are followed up by a phone call. If you receive a phone call, hang up and call them back on a number from the genuine website. They may even use technology to mimic a genuine phone number.

Ask yourself could this be fraud? Don't click on a link or provide personal and financial information. Check first if the request is genuine.

Banks use one-time passcodes, card readers and face biometrics to protect your account. They will never contact you by text message, call or email and ask you to give them codes or take a selfie.! They will never include a link. They will never send an employee, courier or taxi to your home to collect your cards.
