The best game in the opening round of the Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship was at Fitzgerald Park Kilmallock on Saturday when a point from a placed ball in added time by Denis O'Connor from 100 metres after a foul on Donal O'Grady earned Granagh- Ballingarry a deserved draw with gallant Effin.

This game was played in front of a good crowd who gave great support to their sides on a well laid out pitch which was in top class condition despite the heavy rain before the game with Declan O'Driscoll of Ballinacurra Gaels in charge. Denis O'Connor and Thomas Quaid exchanged points in the first 4 minutes and a couple of wides were exchanged before points by Pierce O'Kelly on 6 minutes and Thomas Quaid from a placed ball on 9 minutes left it 0-3 to 0-1 to Effin. Then points were traded by Denis O'Connor from a placed ball on 11 minutes and Enda Kelly on 12 before points by Nickie Quaid on 13 and 14 minutes were cancelled out by Denis O'Connor on 15 minutes and from a placed ball on 17 minutes to leave it Effin 0-6 Granagh-Ballingarry 0-4. Denis O' Connor closed the gap to one from a long range placed ball on 18 minutes, cancelled out by Jack Quaid a minute later. The next five minutes saw both sides miss chances before Thomas Quaid put Effin six ahead when he pointed from a placed ball on 26 minutes and finished past Granagh-Ballingarry keeper Colm Noonan on 27 to leave it Effin 1-8 GranaghBallingarry 0-5. Granagh-Ballingarry, far from being overawed, scored three points courtesy of Niall Kennedy on 28 minutes and Denis O'Connor on 29 and 30 minutes to close the gap to three. The final score of this well contested first half fell to Pierce O'Kelly of Effin who pointed from 30m after a good solo run to leave Effin leading at half time 1-9 to 0-8.

The first seven minutes after the interval saw Niall Kennedy get inside the Effin defence straight from the throw-in only to see his shot come off the crossbar before Denis O'Connor of Granagh-Ballingarry hit two fine points on 33 and 35 minutes; these were cancelled out by Nickie Quaid on 36 minutes and his brother Thomas on 37 to leave it Effin 1-11 Granagh-Ballingarry 0-10 Then Denis O'Connor closed the gap to three with a point from a 70m placed ball on 37 minutes before points by Enda Kelly on 40 and 41 minutes and Ciaran Barrett on 42 put Effin six ahead, 1-14 to 0-11. The next 13 minutes belonged toGranaghBallingarry who played great hurling with David Clancy finishing past Effin keeper James O'Leary on 43 minutes followed by points by Niall Kennedy on 47 minutes and Denis O'Connor from a placed ball on 55 to reduce the gap to the minimum, Effin 1-14 Granagh-Ballingarry 1-13 with fIve minutes to go.

Then Pat Carroll extended Effin's lead to· two with a fine point on 58 minutes. A couple of wides were exchanged before Denis O'Connor showed , his class in added time with points from placed balls on 62 and 63 minutes, the latter from all of 100m. The final whistle sounded from the kick-out to leave the sides level at 1-15 all after a most enjoyable, hard-fought contest. On Saturday's display and with

a strong panel of 31 players to pick from, Granagh-Ballingarry's new team manager Liam Carroll can look forward confidently to the next round against Croom on Saturday 7th or Sunday 8th May.

Granagh-Ballingarry scored 1-7 from play and 0-8 from frees and hit ten wides, three in the first half. Effin scored 1-12 from play and 0-3 from frees and hit 12 wides, three in the first half.

Intermediate hurlers in league action tonight Granagh-Ballingarry, fresh from their 1-15 each draw with Effin, clash with Ballybrown in the second round of Division 2 of the County League tonight Wednesday 13th April in Ballingarry at 6,45pm. In the opening series of games Ballybrown were 2-14 to 2-9 winners at Clarina, while Granagh-Ballingarry went under to Garryspillane by five points, 0-17 to 0-12, at Knocklong. Your support would be welcome for the boys to get their league campaign back on track.

West Minor A and B Hurling Championship round 2

Holders Granagh-Ballingarry/Rathkeale who received a walkover from St Kieran's in the opening round play Southside Gaels (Claughaun, Old Christians and St.Patrick's) on Friday, 13th April, in Claughaun at 6.30pm. Your support would be appreciated for the Granagh-Ballingarry and Rathkeale boys and their

management team of Richie O'Keeffe, James O'Connor, Noel Lynch and Tom Keating as they bid to make a winning start in defence of their West title.

Busy times for Junior B footballers

A busy few days of action lie ahead for GranaghBallingarry in Group 2. Tomorrow Thursday 14th April they play neighbours Rathkeale in Ballingarry at

7pm, and flex their muscles

away to Ballysteen on Saturday at 7pm. Granagh-Ballingarry, Rathkeale and Knockaderry are in group 2 with the top two teams to qualify for the semi-finals.

West Intermediate Hurling Championship quarter-final

Quaid Park Coolyroe is the venue on Friday, 15th April, at 7pm for the clash of Granagh-Ballingarry and Templeglantine. An exciting game is in prospect with the prize for the winners a semi-final against last year's County Junior A champions Dromcollogher-Broadford or Killeedy.

Club draw winners

Granagh-Ballingarry G.A.A. club's first monthly draw of 2016 took place in Dinny A's bar, Ballingarry, recently. First prize of €500 sent to Eoin and Emma Ryan; €100 each to Sean Treacy, Edward Frawley and Jim O'Keeffe.

The April draw will take place on a date to be confirmed. By joining this draw you automatically become a member of the club for 2016 and are included in the weekly club lottery if you pay your €100 in full or in two halves by 1st June.
