MAIRÉAD CHAWKE IS 95 !!!!

Congratulations to the one and only Mairéad Chawke, Chawke's Cross, who celebrated her 95th Birthday on 26th Aug.

HAPPY 95th BIRTHDAY:

On Saturday 26th, that very well know lady at the cross, Mairéad Chawke, celebrated reaching her 95th year. She is hale and hearty and still attends Mass every weekend. The evening before her birthday, she attended Mass in Shanabhotha cemetery and had a smile and greeting for everyone. 1922 is quite a way back and we would find it difficult to recall events that happened, however Mairéad has a great memory. Looking back at some events that took place in the month she was born; Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, dies at age 75. A devastating typhoon came ashore in China, killing about 60,000 people. Albert Einstein left Germany due to threats on his life. The IRA blew up a telegraph cable station in Waterville, Kerry, cutting communication lines between the United States and Europe. Arthur Griffith died aged 50. The first Women's World Games were held in Paris. August 22nd, Michael Collins was killed in an ambush at Béal Na Bláth. WT Cosgrave became Chairman of the Provisional Government. Henry Ford announced that all Ford Motor Company plants would be closed down because of the Industrial crisis, with no timetable to reopen. Mairéad may not be up to speed with facebook, but since her photo went up on the Granagh page it has reached 1,940 people, with good wishes being sent from all over. Everyone in the parish and beyond send best wishes for Happiness and continued good health for a super community person and a lovely lady.
