REMEMBERING OUR DECEASED:

For the month of September,  we remember our family, friends and neighbours, whose mortuary cards are displayed on the Church noticeboard:-  Sean & David Shine, Eileen & Bridie Moloney, Granagh.  Julia Brosnan, Mary Hartigan, Coolruss.   Nora Herlihy, Kingsland.   Philip Noonan, Kilmore.   Johnny Houlihan, Kilmacanearla.   Katherine Martin & Catherine O'Connor, Ballyguile.  Liam English, Lees Cross.   Arthur O'Leary, Castletown.   Ellen Sheehy, Croagh.   Kathleen Hayes & Patrick Power, Pallasgrean.    Tadhg O'Flynn, Ballingarry.   James Curtin, Foynes.   Patsy Fitzgibbon, England.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Liam and Geraldine Herlihy, Kingsland, won the Munster Farmyard of the Year competition, at the 2017 FBD National Awards, which was announced at the National Ploughing Championships in Offaly last week.

We remember Liam's mother, Nora, who was left to run the farm, while rearing a young family, after the death of her husband Tom.   They all got a good grounding in helping out with farm work.   Liam took over the running of the farm and then he met Geraldine.  As he said himself, ' she is as good if not better than himself ', so it is no wonder that they have successfully been building up the farm for the last thirty years.

They also run a fencing business and a hedge-cutting operation.

Geraldine milks the cows every day and not only completes many of the day-to-day outside jobs, while also looking after all the household chores.  The old saying is quite true - " behind every good man is a great woman ".

Their children have also contributed to this success over the years, James is now a contractor, Leanne is doing her Leaving Cert and Daniel his Junior Cert.

Some of the points that helped to win the award - the farmyard is well designed with the focus on cow flow.   Liam is a firm believer of “a place for everything and everything in its place”.       There is a first aid kit and fire extinguisher in each tractor.       All silage plastic, metals and waste oil are recycled.                               Medicines and chemicals are stored in locked-up, designated areas.      There are clear written instructions available for anyone that might be working on the farm.    Congrats once again and keep up the good work.

CULTURE NIGHT:

Again, this year it was a great success, with a huge number of events in city and county.   Friars Gate Theatre held a most unusual event.   They invited Melissa Shiels, Costume Historian and Heritage expert to give a talk on a typical day in the life of a Georgian lady.   She was very entertaining and informative.

She also has a broad range of knowledge and skills relating to medieval crafts such as textile-spinning, dance, song, weaving and sewing.   She brings a range of historical periods to life - including Early Christian, Viking, Norman, Medieval, Tudor and Georgian. Melissa has collected an impressive array of historical artefacts - including weapons & armour, textiles, games, jewellery, books, and clothes from different periods of history.    These talks would be of great interest to schools or historical groups.   Further information - melissa.r.shiels@gmail.com
