Each organisation has the same problem - very poor attendance at their AGM's.!
It is disappointing and dispiriting for all groups, including ours.
New people are always needed for continuation and more importantly you need some central organised group to draw a community together.
And, as we have discovered, to qualify for any type of funding, a formal core group has to be in situ, in order to apply and draw down funds.
If people are not willing to volunteer their time and talents - organisations die and with them, the community spirit ! We have some of our own examples - Macra Na Feirme, Young at Heart, Apostolic Society.
However, it is not always a simple thing to be part of an organisation - children, family, work, school, take up an awful lot of time. Then you have after school activities - Camogie, Soccer, GAA, Community games, Youth club - all run by volunteers !! Where do they get the time ?? Why do they do it ??
Granagh Development was formed to fill a void and has been very successful due to the commitment and generosity of its members.
Our long-time members would like to be able to pass on their knowledge and experience to the new and upcoming members of the community. It takes a year or so for a new member to become familiar with the workings of any organisation, experience takes that little bit longer.!
Thanks to our Officers & Committee who have been re-elected and have volunteered their time for another year.
Chair: John Bennett. Vice Chair: Liam Houlihan. Secretary: Eileen Power. Minute Sec: Niamh O'Hanlon. Treasurer: Anne Hickey. Asst. Treasurer: Ann Fitzgibbon.
PRO: Mary O'Regan. Ballyhoura Delegates: Martin Carroll & Liam Houlihan.
Saturday 10th October:
Next weekend we celebrate our Harvest Masses of Thanksgiving in each church. To thank the Lord for all the blessings we have received, we will be sharing from our plenty, with those who are in need. For one weekend, instead of bringing ‘an envelope from your Box, parishioners will be asked to bring ‘ food from their larder’ !.
Some of the food will be distributed afterwards locally by Vincent De Paul. The vast bulk will be transferred to Novas, who care for the homeless in Limerick City and county and who, as well as their ‘soup runs’, distribute hot meals at night.
Remember, do not bring any perishables and everything must be in date. Some ideas - All kinds of cereals, tinned fruit, veg & fish, potatoes, tea, coffee, sugar, salt, peas, beans, pasta, jelly, custard, biscuits, honey, jams, tinned rice, cooking oils etc.
There are a few spaces remaining on our popular Youth Theatre Workshops' programme, led by Maeve McGrath. The classes start back on Friday 9th October, continue weekly and run for two hours from 5.30pm - 7.30pm. Fee €6 per class. Contact us on 063-98727.
Limerick Community Games have been invited by Limerick Horse Racing to join them for the McMahon’s Race Day on Saturday 10th October at Greenpark Racecourse.
Admission on the day is €15. We have the opportunity of selling tickets in advance for €10 each tickets are valid for Saturday or Sunday.
There will be side shows, fun and games for all the family on the day.
Limerick children will be participating in Community Games activities on Saturday 10th. If you are interested in going to the races at a discount you can contact Loraine at 086-0592682
Granagh Development invite those who are interested in participating in a computer class to forward your names. The classes can be designed to cater for beginners or a refresher maybe, whatever is required. However, a minimum of 8 people are required to give the commitment to attend each night, otherwise it is not viable. Please e-mail - firstname.lastname@example.org or ring 061-399152 as soon as possible.
Congratulations to Emma Kelly and her partner Ger, away out in Perth, on the birth of their baby daughter Alicia. All are doing well and we hope to see them home, over the Christmas. Claire will now be joining the Glamorous Grandmothers' Club !!
Congratulations to Ms. Niamh Power, The Glen, who celebrated her 18th at the weekend. Ann Fitzgibbon also celebrated her birthday - a very young looking forty!
The Granagh / Ballingarry U14s are county champs after defeating Rathkeale over the weekend. Well done to the team and mentors.
' THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKIN ':
Over the last two week-ends, there was lots of walkin' done in the parish. A big crowd joined the ' Climb a Hill for Jack & Jill ' and over two thousand euro was raised. On Sunday last, the annual Ballingarry 10k Fun Run took place. Arranged by Bridget O'Keeffe and her team, for the 15th year, with funds going to the Alzheimers Centre, Adare this year. Well done to organisers and supporters. With all this activity, we hope it may help us to avoid the following: -
' A row of bottles on my shelf, caused me to analyse myself.
One yellow pill, I have to pop, goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take, goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot, tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain and tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all, go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright, prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I would really like to know,
Is what tells each one where to go ?
