HISTORIC  SOCIETY:

A reminder - in case attics are being cleared & presses emptied during the Summer - the history group are looking for any old mementoes, documents, photos which may help them compile a history of Granagh.

They need Information on a wide variety of topics, such as - School 1868-1967. Teachers residence 1911, Pubs, Shops, Forges, Churches, Curates house, GAA field, Creamery 1891, Cemeteries, Quarry, Knockfierna Cross, Liskennett Forestry & Holy Wells.

There were many Clubs active in the parish over the years, such as - GAA (3teams), Camogie, Legion of Mary, Macra NaFeirme, Youth Club, The ICA, Gun Club, Coursing, Athletics, Drama, Siamse, Young at Heart, Apostolic Society, Tennis club etc.

There is a wealth of information to be gathered and we are sure there is information, photos, record books, minute books etc out there - in attics, suitcases, outhouses even !!! So, before it is lost forever, dig it out and pass it on... It will be photographed, copied and returned to you again.

COMMUNITY  GAMES:

Athletes Weekend: We are after a very busy weekend in Mungret where all the athletes of Limerick gathered for their long anticipated event. It began on Friday evening with the long Puck we had 3 boys in U14, Michael Sheehan, Eoin Lynch and Philip Byrnes taking part, and we had two girls taking part Molly Cagney and Ciara O’Connor.

Congratulations to Eoin Lynch who came out tops by winning the U12 Long Puck, Eoin will now go the the national finals in Athlone in August to represent Limerick.

Molly Cagney came a very close second in her long puck. Well done, no shortage of good puck outs in the future for Granagh-Ballingarry.

We had another strong athlete doing the 7k Marathon, Sean O’Connor came home from Irish College to run the 7 k coming in 2nd place and that secures him a place on the team for Athlone in August. Well done Sean.

Saturday began with beautiful sunshine out came the deck chairs and picnic baskets everyone enjoyed the day. We had a number of runners all doing well, Aoife Russell and Lanna Frawley came 1st & 2nd in County U10 Hurdles and Aaron O’Shaughnessy came 1st in County U8s 80m. We had seven runners who won their heats and ran in the finals on Sunday and we had U13 and U10 relay teams who made it to the final on Sundays.

After a good rest, those who qualified for the finals headed back to Mungret - this time the umbrellas and winter woollies were out , it was miserable. Our relay teams were first up with U10 coming in 6th and U13s came in 5th place. We had three U10s who made it to the finals, Mai McKenna, Nancy O’Keeffe and Nessa Markham, but were just out of a medal position. Cathal Markham and Jack McMahon were also squeezed out of the medal position. Brian Sheehy ran a great race and had a great come back at the finish line coming 3rd in 600m. Sunday wasn’t really our day, a bit like to Limerick hurlers, but we will be back again next year for more fun and games. Congratulations to all the children and thanks to Elaine Lyons for training them and thanks to all the parents for supporting their children.

GRANAGH  WEBSITE:

We have had the website on test for the last two weeks and have already received two contacts from former parishioners. Our link for the moment is - http://granaghcommunity.wix.com/granagh Check it out.

We have decided to set up the site formally and will be doing the necessary work over the next week or so. Thanks to Niamh O'Hanlon whose knowhow and commitment has made it possible to launch this site so quickly. When we announce our new address we will ask everyone to pass it on to friends and family at home and abroad.

RELIGIOUS LIVES:

Sr. Margaret has created a lovely display on the Church notice board celebrating the life and work of five locals who entered religious life. There are many more priests, brothers and sisters with parish connections !! It would be a shame if their stories and work is forgotten about. As time moves on it will be more difficult to access information and especially so as older family members pass on. So, if families could gather up their information , with a photo if possible, you would be providing a great service in recording part of parish history.

CHOMHBHRÓN;

We extend our deepest sympathies to Brian, John and family on the death of their mother, Bríd O'Donoghue, Doorlus, who passed peacefully on the 19th June at Beechlodge Care Facility, Bruree. She is predeceased by her husband Kevin and daughter-in-law Maura. Deeply regretted by her sisters, Sr. Joan, Sr. Mary and Pat, daughter-in-law Gemma, grandchildren, relatives, friends and neighbours. Bríd was secretary to Granagh Hall Committee for over thirty years, she and the late Tom Sexton were the longest serving officers in its history. They kept the Hall open, available for everyone to use and always in good condition. The Development Association made a presentation to Bríd in 2013 to mark her dedicated and committed service to the community. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas sioraí di.

GET  WELL:

We send best wishes for a speedy recovery to Kieran Glynn, Croom. Kieran is our Tús employee who was looking after the Hall and doing all the strimming around the crossroads lately.
